Obsidian (Lux #1) 22/09/14 *****
Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.
I was not expecting to like this. I bought it a few months ago, but then found out it was about aliens and was immediately put off, until it appeared in a book pool I am participating in and I figured I might as well read it.
I am extremely glad I did.
The first 30-40 pages are very slow and bored me into thinking the book was going to be boring as hell, but as soon as it got past that stump, it was fast, hot and heavy. The sexual tension between Daemon and Katy is mind-blowing, and I know from experience that level of hot is hard to write, so that definitely deserves a massive round of applause, and it's believable too, they don't fall immediately into bed and in love, they try to ignore it and make it a million times stronger, that is how romance should be written!
Katy has an awesomely quirky personality, very relatable to writer and reader types, because most of us have been known to act like that every now and then, she's not whiny, but not naive either. She doesn't run screaming but doesn't blindly trust, she has a very strong personality and SHE IS CAPABLE OF STANDING UP FOR HERSELF. Which not many heroines are.
Daemon is hot and cold, he pissed me off in the beginning a bit, not because I expected him to downright trust her, but he is at times downright cruel, more so than need be. But HE GROWS, another quality a lot of romance lacks, he lets go off his biased ways and learns that not everything he thought he knew is right.
It isn't too long or too short, there is action, there is chemistry, there is friendship, there is personality, there is GOOD WRITING, this book does not disappoint. Considering I have never had an interest in aliens, and am kinda over paranormal romance, it shocked me how much I enjoyed this, it's DIFFERENT, outside the box that our stereotyped world has come to live in.
SPOILER HERE
AND.. She actually killed a bad guy, stood up for herself, instead of letting the guy do everything, and she didn't spend the next 10 chapters about it. She accepts, it was him or me/friends, andmoves the fuck on. It almost made me weep of happiness.
Can I just say again how much I loved this entire book?
Now I'm done.
Easily 5 stars, well done Jennifer L. Armentrout, you have done exceptionally well, and I have no doubt I will be doing what I can to read every other book that you ever publish.
