After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.
Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
This is easily a new favourite. The main character is strong and original, with flaws and strengths like anyone else. I was not big on Chaol, I found him to be quite flat and couldn't develop any kind of connection, but I liked Dorian, and the relationship built in Throne Of Glass. The world is built from scratch but done well. I found it a little hard to believe that she does not kill a single person, despite being an assassin, it is kind of PG in that area. It is exciting and consuming and quickly becoming one of my favourite series.
Ok, I had a little lapse of time where I couldn't concentrate so I got a little behind where I wanted to be, and I am taking younger sibling to a fair today, so we'll see how that goes. Had to take a break from Prodigy, and in the meantime read
Will be done Prodigy soon and will update with more as I go!
Unfortunately my 24 hour readathon is coming to an end. I suffered extreme hay fever today and the antihistamines knocked me out for a couple hours, so I didn't get as much done as originally planned, but I enjoyed the books I read, so that's a sign. Throughout this challenge I read
Prodigy by Marie Lu The Hostage Bargain by Annika Martin The Wrong Turn by Annika Martin The Deeper Game by Annika Martin Legacy by Kate Brian
Considering that I spent all day yesterday on my feet and hours today at the show, I think I did pretty well. Thank you to all those who encouraged and supported me, there were a couple droopy eye moments there where it really helped. I look forward to doing this again in April next year.
About to start the readathon, first book in line is.... Prodigy by Marie Lu then we'll see where I go from there. Spent the entire day organising a 5 year old's birthday so let's see how I do.
I am participating in Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon on the 18th of October, check back soon for more updates on what I am reading, what I have read, and everything in-between. Join here: http://24hourreadathon.com
I am also going to be doing the Crazy For Young Adult Books- a book club on Goodreads- from the 20th to the 26th. Join the group and sign up if you want to participate! https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/77596
Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion...she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit—more sparkly, more fun, more wild—the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
When Cricket—a gifted inventor—steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.
I really like these books, they are not only contemporary romances, but they are well researched and explore areas of passion that really makes the story real. Anyone else would just say, "I like costumes and I wore this today," but without being able to explain the characters train of thought and the reasoning behind this, this entire book is well thought out and put together. At first glance it looks like another flimsy romance, but it is done really well. Not sure what I thought about Cricket, he is a little bit strange, and their romance is a little all over the place, but I enjoyed Anna and Etienne's appearances, as they fit in well to the story. The Max-factor is very believable, as it is the standard practice for someone not completely in control of their emotions. She isn't all "Cricket is back, I need to dump Max." She really tries to make it work with Max, despite his douche-y behaviour. She really believed she loved him and struggled with that in a very realistic way. All together the story is well put together, the characters like-able, even Cricket's sister is understandable to an extant.Happy to give this one 4 stars.
Every girl who had taken the test has died. Now it's Kate's turn.
It's always been just Kate and her mom - and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear that her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld - and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy - until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess.
If she fails...
I didn't hate it the way I do some books, but I did not like it either. I downloaded this as a free ebook and thought the story sounded really good. So I downloaded it but didn't think of it again, then recently, it was included in a book pool I am participating in so I thought I would have a go. Not something I would recommend. The plot line is interesting, but I wouldn't say good, it's not very researched and spends too much time trying to put Christian values in Greek Gods. I will tell you now, the Greek Gods were not created the way christianity was, they are not an excuse for humanity to act like judgemental hypocrites, they do not care about sins, about lust, or greed, or any of that, because they are all guilty of it. Have you not heard the myths, they succumb to every desire not caring about the consequences, much like humanity does, but are honest about it. The main character is really quite strange. I did not like her, but she wasn't infuriating, so I can't figure it out. The romance is slow and boring, they have no chemistry, no real connection, it feels very much like a middle-age arranged marriage with the couple trying to convince themselves they give a damn about each other. They don't. And what kind of name is 'Henry', he's meant to be the God of the fricken underworld, but every time I read his name I think of the guy who plays the love interest in the "Bridget Jones" movie, awkward and undesirable. Who the council is is so obvious its not funny. The entire 'cast' just a set of strange, without personality and so unlike gods it is ridiculous. The writing wasn't terrible, besides the stiff unbelievable interactions, I mean seriously, "Stay away form my boyfriend" then jumping headfirst into a rock? Who does that? I would have let her die out of stupidity. I'm only giving it 2 stars because I could finish it. But the more I think about it, the more I hate it. Maybe that is because I have read books on the matter that are actually good, but this just didn't do it for me.
Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came. She can't believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.
Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.
They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.
War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.
Awesome conclusion to a fantastic series. Although for the last 100 approx pages I couldn't get over her leaving the books behind. Even if the world was ending and people were dying, it would still not stop me from reading. When I plan for an apocalypse I plan at least 3 boxes of just some of my favourites so I won't get bored. Don't worry, this one will be among them. It was a good way to conclude them, wrapping things up properly, but still leaving a little bit to the imagination. Yeah, I would still love another one, but if a series has to end, this is how it should. I don't think it was as good as the other ones, maybe because after 4 books it gets harder to be original, but it doesn't lack. It just doesn't feel completely there. But it has the same good features, interesting, multi-layered, witty characters, hot romance, good base structure, good writing, and a good book overall. 4 well deserved stars. It would be 5, but it just felt a little bit repetitive, not that it bothered me while reading it, just something I noticed after finishing it.
I am a avid reader with ever-changing colours of hair, I live for my younger brothers, books, writing and psychology. I have a pretty amazing collection of mental "disorders" and figured I might as well start sharing.
